Mission
Communiversity Youth Programs fulfill an important component of the Center’s mission of community outreach and enrichment by working to improve student performance through education and practical experience. The programs are designed to empower children with lifelong tools by:
- Providing exposure to various aspects of African and African American history, heritage and culture.
- Creating opportunities for cultural enrichment and academic enhancement.
- Developing skill sets that foster community building, leadership, and interpersonal interaction.
- Connecting them to community resources that directly benefit and enhance their learning experiences.
Communiversity Youth Programs are cooperative programs that function in coordination with the school systems in Orange, Chatham and Durham Counties. Communiversity seeks to bridge the gap between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its surrounding communities by establishing mentor relationships between participants and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student advisors.

Other Resources
The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History was established in 1988 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to honor the late Dr.Stone, faculty member and avid Center supporter. An advocate for social justice and public service, she was committed to the cultural education of youth and development of student leadership. Communiversity, a cornerstone program of the Center, was created to honor Dr.Stone's dedication and commitment to educating young people in communities surrounding the University.
Communiversity provides transportation for student participants to the campus for most programs. Transportation is an integral part of the program; therefore, we invite tax-free donations from businesses and organizations to offset ongoing expenses.
Bonner Leaders is one of the leadership arms of Communiversity. It provides committed, focused, creative and innovative students with an opportunity to receive a scholarship for committing two years of volunteer service in a management or curriculum development role to the program's components.
Volunteers are required to fill out an application to the program. Applications can be picked up at the Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History. Volunteers are requested to list their subjects of strength and submit an essay describing their respective qualifications and define their impact and connection to the overall program. The Director of Communiversity Youth Programs will make notification for volunteer participation.
