Haile Gerima
Filmmaker Haile Gerima visits for a one-week residency. Gerima, a film professor at Howard University whose films include Sankofa (1994) and Ashes & Embers (1982), will conduct a 3-part master workshop in filmmaking. Gerima will also present a lecture on his past and present film projects. The workshops are open to all aspiring filmmakers or those interested in filmmaking. Session I: Scriptwriting & Directing
Stone Center Classroom, 2nd Floor
In session one, Gerima will give an overview of the relationship of scriptwriting and directing for the digital age, following the idea of scriptwriting structure in the context of one's particular culture. This session will put into context the high tech, seductive stereotype cinema in the depiction of African-Americans. - Wednesday, February 27, 2008

Session II: Documentary Filmmaking
Stone Center Seminar Room 200
This session focuses on the exploration of the individual personal approach as well as collective implications of documentary filmmaking. This session will utilize Gerima's work on The Maroons documentary as a case study. - Friday, February 29, 2008

Session III: Film Directing & Visual Dramatics

In this final session, Gerima will discuss the relationship of film directing and visual dramatics, dealing primarily with cultural specifics in creating cinematic accents.
