Sonja Haynes Stone Memorial Lecture

Farai Chideya

Author, journalist and cultural critic Farai Chideya will discuss "Digital Drum or Digital Divide: Race, Responsibility, and Representation In the New Media Age."  Chideya's books will be for sale at the lecture and a reception will follow.

A graduate of Harvard University, Chideya’s journalism career has spanned across broadcast, print and radio media. She has covered topics from Hurricane Katrina to the recent Presidential election. Chideya prides herself on her ability to go from discussing serious journalism to popular fiction. 

She is the founder and editor of popandpolitics.com, an online journal for 18-29 year olds.  

For three years, Chideya formerly hosted NPR’s News and Notes, a daily national program about African-American and African diaspora issues. Before NPR, Chideya hosted Your Call, a daily news and cultural call-in show in San Francisco. She wrote three books on race, politics and the media including The Color of Our Future: Race in the 21st Century (2000)Essence magazine selected her novel, Kiss the Sky (2009), as its May 2009 book club selection.
