Los Pleneros de la 21
ABOUT LP21
Los Pleneros de la 21 are considered New York’s preeminent Afro-Puerto Rican bomba and plena musicians. Bomba and plena are traditional Afro-Puerto Rican musical genres respectively dating back to the early 17th and 20th centuries. The music originated when Spanish colonists brought West African slaves to cultivate Puerto Rico’s sugarcane. Bomba describes a range of regional styles, rhythmic patterns and associated dance styles that were cultivated by Africans and their descendents in the context of plantation life in early colonial Puerto Rico. Plena is performed using handheld drums and has beats and rhythms similar to bomba.
Since 1983, LP21 have performed for audiences all over the world and released several recordings. The group consists of an intergenerational mix of Puerto Rican folk master’s and professional musicians united to preserve and honor their heritage. During each lively performance, LP21 often combine bomba and plena with jazz, salsa, rock and rap to create excitement and energy throughout the crowd. The group’s album, Para Todos Ustedes, was nominated for a 48th Annual Grammy Award (2006) for Best Traditional World Music Album.
The performance is free and open to the public.
