13 Months of Sunshine
The fall 09 edition of the Diaspora Festival of Black and Independent Film, Passion and Remembrance: Dislocation/Relocation/Diaspora (D/R/D), includes films that address historical and contemporary movements of people and the social dynamics that tend to define their daily lives.
In 13 Months of Sunshine, a young Ethiopian agrees to marry the cousin of a friend to help her acquire a green card to become a US citizen. In exchange, her family pays him $20,000, which he plans to use to open a traditional Ethiopian coffee shop. However, the naturalization process and the struggle to maintain traditional Ethiopian values prove to be much for them to bear.
