Apply Now for Beech, DUAL Fellowships

The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History has several undergraduate fellowship opportunities for the upcoming academic year. The center has four fellowships and a video production coordinator position available. These are excellent opportunities for undergraduate students seeking professional work experience through a paid fellowship or internship.

HARVEY E. BEECH PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIPS

The Stone Center is currently accepting applications for its Harvey E. Beech Professional Development Fellowship program. The program is open to all full-time UNC at Chapel Hill sophomores, juniors and seniors in good academic standing. Fellows will earn a $1200 stipend for successfully completing the 10-week fellowship.

The application deadline is September 22 by 5 p.m. Call the Stone Center at 962-9001 for additional information.

Public Relations & Communications Fellow

The public relations & communications fellow will assist the PR & communications specialist with media outreach, feature and news release writing, and program publicity campaigns. The fellow will gain valuable PR experience in a non-profit cultural organization. Applicants should possess good copywriting and grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.

Community Education (Communiversity) Fellow

The community education fellow will assist the Stone Center communiversity coordinator with organizing and supervising Communiversity Youth Programs. Duties include maintaining volunteer database, organizing and ordering educational materials, assisting with the facilitation of site coordinator, parent council and volunteer meetings, and creating the Communiversity newsletter.

DIRECTOR'S UNDERGRADUATE ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP FELLOWSHIP (DUAL)

The Stone Center's Director’s Undergraduate Administrative Leadership Fellowship (DUAL) provides a UNC at Chapel Hill undergraduate student an opportunity to work closely with the director of the Stone Center. The fellow will participate in staff, advisory board and other key meetings, work on specially designed projects, assist the director in drafting project, program and special reports, and attend outside meetings where possible and appropriate.

The DUAL Fellow will receive a $1200 monetary stipend for completing the program. The DUAL Fellowship is a 10-week program to begin in September 2008 and is open to all registered UNC at Chapel Hill sophomores, juniors and seniors in good academic standing. Applicants for the DUAL Fellowship will be selected on the basis of their scholarship, campus and off-campus participation in service activities, clarity in describing goals for the fellowship, sense of social responsibility and the quality of recommendations submitted in support of their application.

The application deadline is September 15, 2008 by 5 p.m.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Letter of intent (limit three pages, double-spaced); the letter should address selection criteria described above
  • An official or unofficial transcript
  • Two letters of recommendation (faculty, staff or community member)

JOB OPENING: VIDEO PRODUCTION COORDINATOR

The Stone Center is currently accepting application letters for a student video production coordinator to work no more than 20 hours per month. Under general supervision, the VPC will be responsible for recording Stone Center evening programs throughout the 2008-09 academic year. The VPC will also edit and transfer video to an electronic format, archive video of Stone Center programs and events, and properly maintain and store all video equipment when not in use. Interested applicants should have similar experience and knowledge of setting up and operating professional video and computer equipment.

This position is only open to UNC at Chapel Hill students. In your letter, please describe your related experience and qualifications. Application letters should be submitted no later than August 27.  This position will begin in early September 2008.
